REX
Engineering Manager
August 2021 - January 2023
Established and led both offshore and onshore engineering teams across multiple ventures. Developed a property listing platform and built a self-service infrastructure company. Drove key technical initiatives and received recognition for innovation and leadership.
Details
- Leadership & Team Management:
- Initially served as the senior engineer for OwnProp, a tech company within the REX ecosystem, where I architected and implemented their data model and backend.
- Mentored a junior engineer, helping them grow into a leadership role, which they took over after my transition to another team.
- Helped establish an offshore engineering team at PrimePro, another company within the REX ecosystem, to enhance development capabilities and reduce operational costs.
- Built and managed a diverse team of onsite and remote engineers at TechCore, yet another company in the ecosystem.
- Project & Product Management:
- Collaborated with a product manager and designer at OwnProp to make critical product decisions for the property listing product, resulting in a solid MVP that allowed the company to list its first real estate deal to accredited investors.
- Led the development of TechCore, a self-service infrastructure platform (akin to Heroku 2.0), enabling engineering leaders to deploy applications and set up databases with no code in under five minutes.
- Created a multi-layered application using React, Node.js, and GoLang to allow users to provision their own infrastructure.
- Ensured TechCore was a true multi-tenant solution. Implement things like for example seperate AWS accounts and infrastructure.
- Developed a flexible platform with robust abstractions that allowed for easy support of additional resources like Redis or RabbitMQ, requiring minimal engineering effort to implement new features.
- Created a system where DevOps engineers could configure the infrastructure and selectively expose configurations to end users, enabling customization and flexibility.
- Operational Management:
- Handled sensitive personnel matters, including the termination of a DevOps engineer at TechCore, ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining team morale and productivity.
- Was on the hiring team for the head of engineering.
- Developed relationships with outside suppliers for engineering resources.
- Recognition & Achievements:
- Earned the "Unicorn in the Making" award from REX Leadership, recognizing the potential of TechCore to reach a billion-dollar valuation due to its innovative approach and market potential.
- Key Takeaways:
- Learned alot about the risks of remote work and actions we can take to mitigate them, such as working hours and async work.
- Gained a great understanding for shared resources, such as architecture, legal, design and product. How one prioritizes correctly!
- Despite significant achievements, I chose to part ways with REX due to a loss of confidence in the leadership's ability to navigate the tech market downturn and make rational decisions to support the ecosystem's growth. This was a great learning experience tho not positive!
